SUMMARY:LexSeeHer Spinning Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:On August 31\, 1769\, forty-five women dusted off their spinning wheels and gathered at the home of Anna Harrington\, across from the town common\, for a political protest against the British government. Unlike the storied protests of the era in Boston\, male-dominated and often turning violent\, these women both took a stand and created a practical solution to their problem. Over the course of the day\, they spun thousands of yards of cotton and flax into thread that would be made into homespun clothing\, worn as visible opposition to British taxation. Join us on the 252nd anniversary of this event as LexSeeHer\, an organization dedicated to recognizing women's history in Lexington\, will gather at the original Harrington House site to acknowledge the spinning bee and those who made it happen. In a small town\, just how big of a crowd would forty-five women make? Come and find out as the group stages a tableau representing these brave\, industrious women\, and remember the unsung heroes of the Revolution! We will also be viewing the spot proposed for a new monument dedicated to Lexington women's history.
